Endangered Species Sea Turtle Cold Pack for pain & fever relief! Hi. I'm a Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) and I live here, in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. I get my name from the color of the green fat under my shell. I average 300 to 350 pounds and am more than 3 feet long when fully grown. I have a small head which I cannot retract into my shell like other turtles can, my upper shells are wide and smooth and my limbs are paddle-like for swimming. I am the second-largest turtle species in the world! I travel more than 1,000 miles from my feeding grounds throughout the ocean to the warm, tropical beaches where I mate and nest. Researchers recently determined that I use "magnetic mapping" - the biologic equivalent of a GPS - to navigate on my lengthy journeys. I belong to one of the oldest turtle groups in the world and am older than humans by about 130 million years. Even though I have swam the seas and shuffled on the beaches for millions of years before humans arrived, it is the human presence that is causing sharp declines in our numbers. Through hunting for meat and egg collection, loss of habitat by development and accidental capture in fishing grear, my population has dropped from millions to perhaps less than 200,000 worldwide. Only a tiny fraction fo my female reiends can be found nesting on U.S. beaches, primarily on the East Coast of Florida. Because of this we are classified as an endangered species, a distinction I could surely without. Since 1947, Defenders of Wildlife has been doing all they can to help endangered animals like me, the Green Sea Turtle, and others. Check out www.defenders.org and find out how you can help!
